Department of Objects

The Department of Objects (D.O.O) is a cloud based content management and distribution system that enables artists and developers who are working in the medium of 3D to easily manage, host, and license their work for ALL immersive computing platforms. Although the commercial availability of new VR & AR platforms like the Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Microsoft Hololens and Playstation VR are making the technology and hardware more accessible to artists, the medium is still nascent. The central idea behind the Department of Objects is the organization of the body of found objects. We are at the beginning of a massive change in computing interfaces that will alter the way we interact with objects, each other, and information in the physical and virtual worlds. With the promise of immersive computing, we find ourselves in a place similar to what we experienced prior to Netscape’s launch in 1994 - a great unknown with incredible potential. We will simplify the way that 3D artworks can scale across augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality by providing a direct and non-technical channel for distributing artworks into immersive computing apps and experiences. The Department of Objects is responding to the challenges faced by artists and developers, specifically those who are adapting 3D artworks for immersive computing, by providing: -Workflow automation -Content versioning -Error checking -Automated Formatting and compression -Analytics -Dynamic runtime deployment at runtime of 3D material and interactive components -A repository of 3D material that artists can both contribute to and source from an in-platform search engine
